GCSE Design & Technology

This GCSE has been designed to encourage you to be able to design and make products with creativity and originality, using a range of materials and techniques. You will be enthused and challenged by the range of practical activities possible. The course will focus on timber based materials and processes, but you will be required to have a working knowledge of metal based materials, polymers, paper & boad and textiles. The use of new technologies and materials is also encouraged in this course.

The course is also designed to foster your awareness of the need to consider sustainability and environmental impact of your design work.

The course breaks down into two units, a written exam and a major ‘design and make’ assignment (NEA).

This is a design based course:

• The specification combines theoretical content with practical application.

• The use of mathematical skills is a key requirement and is tested in the examination.

• An understanding of underlying scientific principles is expected.

• An iterative approach to designing is encouraged.

• Various design strategies can be used.

• The acquisition of practical skills is still expected.

Exam board: AQA

Unit 1: Exam – Written Paper

2 hr paper – 100 marks – 50% of final grade – Untiered

Questions vary from multi-choice questionss to extended response


Unit 2: Non-exam assessment (NEA)

Single design and make task – 100 marks – 50% of final grade – Untiered
